Moles, Voles and Chipmunks will destroy your yard!  while seeking food, they create tunnels just under the surface of the soil causing, a potentially dangerous situation where someone may trip and fall. Most people believe that if they just treat their lawns for insects, then they will go away! Moles are the only insect eaters, Voles are herbivorous, feeding on a variety of grasses, herbaceous plants, bulbs, and tubers. Chipmunks eat seeds, nuts and other fruits.
Although it is true that moles eat grubs but, grubs are just one of the many insects they feed on. The mole diet consist of all types of insects, spiders, earthworms and of course, grubs.
Interesting facts about moles:
  • Moles have an enormous appetite - they eat                                                                                                    just about 24 hours a day because they must maintain their high energy requirements. They will often consume the equivalent of 60–90% of their body weight in a single day and may tunnel 100 feet in the process.
  • Moles CAN transmit diseases to humancausing a health risk - Moles carry ticks that are hosts for many dangerous diseases such as Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, anaplasmosis, and tularemia. The insects that moles eat carry insect parasites and other parasitic organisms, like Bartonella and tapeworms, may also pass from the fleas or ticks to pets and to humans In rare cases, these pests can transmit diseases that affect humans, like rabies.
  • Moles do not eat plants - Moles are insectivores however plant damage can occur due to their tunneling through the roots of plants in seeking food. Voles on the other hand  are herbivores that feed on grasses, tree bark, roots, tubers, and vegetable crops. The rodents generally prefer to live in moist areas with plenty of grass and groundcover where they can scavenge for food without being spotted by predators. This leads them to take up residence in cultivated areas, where their feeding habits wreak havoc on flower gardens. During times when plant food is scarce, voles eat small insects or the remains of dead animals.
  • Lawns with Bermuda grass are likely to repel moles.

Common signs of vole damage include:

  • Surface runways: irregular paths of clipped and trampled grass or soil, about 1-2" in width

  • Holes in lawn: clean, round holes about 1.5" in diameter, often in line with surface runways

  • Girdled bark/stems: irregular gnaw marks about 1/8" wide, 3/8" long and 1/16" deep, along the very bottom of trees or plants

  • Damaged roots, which may lead to delayed or lack of fruit production in trees yellow, wilted plants

  • Stolen bulbs

Common signs of chipmunk damage include:

  • Structural or foundational damage from chipmunk burrows

  • Holes in lawn or garden from digging for plant roots

  • Seed piles underneath bird feeders

  • Uprooted bulbs

  • Chipmunk tracks: tiny prints in the soil with four toes in the front and five in the back

All mammals and insects rely on pheromones and odors to communicate to each other.
Pheromones communicate to one another that this is a safe place, how to return to their nesting place, or in the case of repellents, using a fear response to communicate that this is not a good place to be and the moles, voles and chipmunks simply stay away. Many of the home remedies and do-it-yourself repellents on the market can be somewhat effective. However, eradicating infestations can be incredibly difficult due to their secretive, subterranean nature. Most repellents on the market all have the same problem - once they get wet they quickly dissolve, break down and become ineffective. Omega Pest Management utilizes a specialized repellant that will last for several months and will actually rejuvenate and activate the release of the repellant when it gets wet from rain or watering the lawn. We encourage our customer to water the material often.  Omega Pest Management Guarantees the eradication of the unwanted pest!
